Prom and the Simple Curls
Operating on a tight budget this year? Welcome to the real world,
darling! Those who aren’t probably should be, and those that are, have
the research down to such a science that they will pull off a totally
beautiful look as simply as possible. When you think of prom, you think
of dress, accessories, and hair. Let’s take it one step further, and
think of hair as the ultimate accessory. Curlier the better as your
curls lend themselves to so many classical and gracious looks. You can
customize your look like no other. Is this the budget breaker? Of course
not! It’s the saver!
An elaborate do can be the anchor of your total prom look. Once you
have the style picked and tried, then plan what jewelry pieces you will
compliment the hair with. Remember, simple and elegant is the goal.
Start with pieces you already own. A tear drop necklace is never out of
style. You don’t own one? Go reminisce with mom. If you have not played
in her jewelry box since you were a little girl, get permission to do so
now. Better yet, invite her to help! Looking back, you will be glad you
created memories with mom.
Now for the most romantic looks you can achieve with curly hair. The
pinned up ringlets are perfect for the off the shoulder gown. It’s a
simple do, but may take more than two hands. Look to family and friends
first, and if no one is game, consider your stylist. Practice makes
perfect, so this look takes commitment to achieve the day of the prom.
Using your stylist should eliminate that, but if someone in the family
is experienced and willing to help, they should be willing to practice!
Have the camera ready to critique the look and make certain that balance
is achieved. Most faces are flattered by the pinned up ringlets. If
you have a long face that is somewhat thin, you may want to consider
creating the updo lying closer to your head. Then, add more volume to
the sides. The oval and heart shaped face will be natural and stunning.
Square faces can find balance by pulling ringlets and tendrils down
around the jaw and cheeks to soften the face. The curly updo is perfect
for chin to shoulder length hair, preferably all one layer. Textured
hair can be styled and teased into this look, but for those that do not
hold a natural curl well, it’s not advisable. This look is created in
9 steps. Yes, consider sweetening the deal for your help by providing a
spa atmosphere in which to practice in. Have fun and pamper yourselves
before you get down to the serious business of your hair. The practice
is the time to discover what it will take to do the do.
- Wash your hair and apply the diffuser to your blow dryer.
Using
your finger, you will create the tight ringlets. (Look on the
Internet for video instruction if you’re unsure.)
- Smooth your hair and pull it back from either side to the crown
of your head, sitting high and tight on the top of your head. This
is a half pony tail. Secure this with a bungee.
- You will then place your 2nd finger on your right hand 1 and ½
inch below the base of the half pony tail. (This is where you’ll
need more hands.)
- Fold the half pony tail upwards and over your finger, making a
small loop. Hold the new loop firmly in place.
- Pin the new loop in place with bobby pins that match your hair
color. Once secure, flatten gently against your scalp.
- Divide the hair at the bottom of your scalp in 2 equal parts.
Part straight down the middle.
- One at a time, pull the sections up and over the half pony
section so the hair is up near the base of the pony tail.
- Pin each section of the bottom hair so the ringlets cascade over
from the base of the half pony tail.
- Use a good holding spray to keep they style in place.
You now look simply amazing!
