Curly Hair Care - The Curly, The Wavy, The Kinky

The type of curls you are sporting can determine the type of hair care you should consider when it comes to detangling your curls. The texture of your hair has to be considered as you may damage delicate hair in the process of detangling. When you are in doubt, the safest method is to detangle with your own fingers. Known as the finger pick, it accompanies a natural dry and styling of your hair. Less hair is pulled using this technique, and curls will detangle much easier.

The concern with curly, wavy, and kinky hair is its lack of ability to hold moisture. This is due to the structure and shape of the curl. Because of this, any sort of heat drying is left off when possible. It’s not unusual to lose hair as you finger pick but not anymore than when you use a comb. The hair shed is felt to be natural and preventative measures would probably be lost on this. There are many opinions on the best way. It’s self-care, though, that is best determined by you and no one else.

If you wish to check out wide tooth combs or hair picks for your curly hair, there are certainly some fine ones out there. It’s the teeth that are important. Make sure they are smooth as silk. This will prevent tearing or pulling your hair, causing damage. Then go with what’s comfortable for you and what seems to work best. Most will discover their preferred method. It is generally advised with curly thick hair that a brush is never to be used on either wet or dry hair. Curly hair has proven to be too fragile to brush. Kinky curls are the exception. This texture of hair is so dense and thick that some find using a baby brush is their choice method of detanglement. In learning what works best for you, here is a technique to try.

  1. From bottom to the top and starting at the ends of your hair, fingerpick up the strand until you reach your roots.
  2. Work through the separate strands and you will begin to surface pick. This means you will use your fingers to stroke through your hair on its surface. You may start on any part of the strand. You will then work your way to the underside.
  3. Combine both ways if you like to break up the pattern and somewhat hurry up the process.
  4. Once detangled, apply a leave in conditioner and/or detangling product that does not include alcohol. Wrap your hair on top of your head and apply a towel to allow the conditioner to penetrate deeply.

Improper detangling leads to hair breakage. This is why it’s so important to understand and find the technique that works for you. If you come across a knot or entanglement that is difficult and seems harmful to continue to work with, apply more conditioner to the tangle. Then work gently with your fingers to loosen the tangle and begin to smooth a bit of the strand at a time. Always take the time to pin your hair in sections. Work one section at a time as you detangle. Again, start at the ends of your hair and work until you reach your roots. If time is running out, and we all know that it does, wait as long as you can and allow hair to dry as much as it can before you pick up the comb. As you finish a section, twist and pin back up. Start on another section until hair is completely detangled.
